An Ode To Humor (or what’s left of it)

Dear Andy Borowitz,

Full disclosure, I’ve been a fan for quite a while. That said, I’ve never felt any obligation to sing your praises; you were a funny guy and I enjoyed reading your comments on varied topics. That was it in the kudos department.

How things change. Mr. Borowitz, I find myself hanging on your comments on Substack, listening to the occasional interview and when desperate, returning to ones I’ve already seen.

And now? Now I am desperate on a daily basis. (For those reading this who are Trumpers, please hold your opinions. to yourself While I’ve heard you, I’m not directing this to you with intention). I am truly frightened that we are heading into an autocracy with incredible alacrity. I mean, Andy WTF? Can there be a happy ending for this experiment known as democracy? But I digress..

I look to you for that which I don’t see anywhere else – a dose of snark with a nod to whatever can be gleaned from the news du jour. Point always well taken. A nod and a smile and a giggle. I’m not giggling much these days. I am grateful that you elicit that response regularly.

Look, I’ve done all the deep breathing I can do without passing out; I delight in the cardinals that visit our bird feeder throughout the day; appreciate the discreet moments in between that offer a little opportunity for calm. I can’t say it’s all working. But I keep trying.

Andy (can I call you Andy?) you are the water bearer in this desert and as much as I dread the direction we are going, I am equally grateful to you. And if this is a shameless plug, so be it.

    1. Tense for sure…I’ve got to figure out my tolerance level, ‘cause I have maxed it already and this administration hasn’t even been in for a month!

      1. I think that’s the point. They want to lead with chaos and confusion in so many things that people will be overwhelmed and not fight back.

      2. well, one thing got rescinded today due to the uproar, (all a misunderstanding….) ,but plenty more where that came from. we ca not let down our guard

  1. We need to have humor in these times. I listen to the late night opening monologues. Colbert is one of my favs. He is the liberal version of Fox News but perhaps more truthful. It’s gonna be a long 4 years.

  2. Love Andy, too.I’m afraid I’ve gone a step or two, or three lower, tho…John Mulaney has an act called “There’s a horse

  3. What a comfort to find you in my inbox today! As ever, on the same exact page, paragraph by paragraph, line by line, word by word

…and indeed, glimmers of humor are not just appreciated but necessary.

Love your post and really this…”Look, I’ve done all the deep breathing I can do without passing out; I delight in the cardinals that visit our bird feeder throughout the day; appreciate the discreet moments in between that offer a little opportunity for calm. I can’t say it’s all working. But I keep trying.”

    So much this.

    Thanks for this my friend.

    xo

  4. I, too, love Borowitz and these days cling to bits of humor like rats to a sinking ship. Much wisdom here, angel, in grabbing for those moments that bring relief…a bit of time in the sun, birdsong, time passed with those gorgeous granddaughters, our pets. Like you I am breathing, chanting, pacing and doing my level best to keep a positive outlook. Thank you for the respite and shared sentiments! Xoxox
